Skew Gallery Presents:
Red Glare by Laurel Smith
Artist Book and Rocket Launch
12:00, Sunday, May 20, 2012
Please join us at Skew Gallery as contemporary artist Laurel Smith celebrates the annular solar eclipse that will take place on May 20, 2012, by launching her original edition 1 of 12 art book in conjunction with the launch of her seminal Red Rocket used as an art component in Smith’s current Red Glare exhibition
Red Glare is a site-specific collection of new works inspired by Smith’s process of writing her dissertation for her Ph.D. Developing a variety of elements for her exhibition, including large format photo-imaging, found objects, drawing, and manufactured multiples, Smith visually translates her dissertation’s philosophical exploration of “every thing you see that is coloured, titled, judged, considered, translated, interpreted, perceived, experienced or read as red is evacuated to Mars.”
The Red Glare book is a symbolic gesture of Smith’s dissertation that posed fantastical thinking, leading to questions of what would remain if we were indeed capable of eradicating red from our world. Each of Smith’s books is an original copy, as she employs individual mark-making to pages throughout.
Smith will also add her sci-fi-like paperback to her ever-growing collection of books with the word red in the title. Smith has a call out to the public for their participation in building this literary artifact, requesting people bring to Skew Gallery a signed, dated book, whether it is paperback, children’s story, or hardcover, as long as it has the word Red in the title.
The rocket launch will take place outside in front of the gallery shortly after 12:00, with tea and orange juice served inside.
